[1] Roger Dewhirst of Whalley is listed as the father of John at his Christening. It is possible that the origin of the Dewhirst name began in Whalley where a village was believed to have been "lost" as enforced clearing and dispersal of the former inhabitants took place to make way for sheep pastures at the height of the wool trade from the 15th Century onwards. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation (Poll Taxes). Go here for an explanation of the surname.

NOTE: There are other children Christened in Whalley at the Church of St Mary and All Saints between 1500 and 1600 but it is not known if or how they are related to Roger. This information, based upon dates, suggests that Roger may have had a brother/cousin named Thomas who sired Issabella b. 1540; and nephews or other sons than John, named Henry (who sired Issabella b. 1566, Elizabeth b. 1570, Ana b. 1573, Margreta b. 1580), Thomas ( who sired Johana b. 1567, another Johana b. 1568, Richard b. 1570, and Christopher 1590), Christopher (who sired Richard b. 1569, Agnes b. 1572) , Edward (who sired Robert 1588), and Richard (who sired Margreta b. 1598) - these are likely other other descendant lines with the same DNA from Whalley and may explain other DNA matches:
